It's quite a revelation what happened inside Esther's Haircutting Studio in Tarzana, California, Friday night 16th Feb 07, when Britney Spears showed up and commenced her infamous shave-a-thon.

Esther Tognozzi, owner of the salon, said that after Britney shaved off all her hair, "She just looked in the mirror and said with tears in her eyes, 'Oh, my God, I shaved it all off. My mom is going to be so upset with me.'" Tognozzi says that prior to shaving Britney complained that her extensions were "very tight and uncomfortable."

Tognozzi, who waived her normal $20 cut fee for Britney, adds that, other than the tears when she looked in the mirror, "Britney had a blank face and showed little emotion whatsoever."

"We have no idea how she found us," a salon worker tells Us. "She just walked in and said she wanted to shave her head. Esther has been in the business for 30 years and said, 'I'm not doing that.' But Britney was set on having her head shaved so she started doing it herself."  But why did Brit decide to go bald?

The salon owver says, "I don't know what's going on in her head, but she obviously is not very happy deep down, but she thought it would make her happy to have her head shaved. She didn't say if she liked it or not, but she thought it would make her happy to do it so she did."

Britney's shocking salon visit came amid conflicting reports of a 24-hour stint in rehab earlier in the week. Britney returned to L.A. Friday on an American Airlines flight from Miami, surprising fellow passengers by sitting in the last row of coach class.

And within hours after landing, the peripatetic mother-of-two managed once again to shock onlookers. This time by shaving her head and getting two tattoos at a curbside parlor in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley.

Britney left her Malibu home Friday evening and paid a visit to a Tarzana salon for her brief stint in, uh, hair-hab.  But Britney's night of self-defiling had only just begun. At about 8:30 p.m. Britney arrived at Body & Soul Tattoo in Sherman Oaks.

Shop employee Emily Wynne-Hughes said that Britney arrived at the parlor agitated and, when asked why she shaved her head, replied, "I don't want anyone touching me. I'm tired of everybody touching me."

Hughes adds, "She wasn't making sense at all and you could tell she's not in a good place at all, and that she is totally freaking out."  Hughes went on Britney then got a black-white-and-pink cross tattooed on her lower hip and red-and-pink lips on her wrist. The price: $80.

Britney was not an ideal subject, however. "She was a nightmare to deal with," says Hughes. "She was screaming and flipping out from the pain and wiggling her body all around."  At one point during Britney's one-hour visit, Hughes asked Britney why there was a pink stain on her fluffy white handbag and Britney said she had "spilled Nyquil all over it."

Hughes, who was somewhere between appalled and concerned by what she saw, adds, "After she left the shop we all just looked around and said to each other, 'We just saw a huge celebrity on the verge of a nervous breakdown.'"  The unconfirmed rehab reports come three days after Spears' former assistant, Felicia Culotta, posted a letter on a Britney fan site saying she is “crushed/saddened/heart sick by the way her life is unfolding.”

Culotta told fans: “I want you to know that we (as in her Family and nearest and dearest - all of whom are NOT on the payroll anymore!) are doing EVERYTHING in our power to get help for Britney."

Usmagazine.com reported on Thursday, after partying hard last week in New York City, Spears traveled to South Florida this week for a little R&R with her two sons, 17-month-old Sean Preston and 5-month-old Jayden James. Spears, 25, had checked into the Four Seasons Hotel in Miami around midnight on Monday with her boys, sources told Us."

Though she originally planned to stay a week, Britney unexpectedly cut her trip short on the night of Valentine’s Day after drinking one glass of champagne from a bottle of Dom Perignon that she ordered to her room, says a source.  Apparently, “She was very eager to [depart] because something happened.”

Those who thought Britney Spears couldn't be further removed from her former pop princess image are in for a shock.  On Friday night, Spears was spotted in Los Angeles sporting a never before seen look — a newly shaved head.

The same day, reports surfaced that Spears checked into rehab at Eric Clapton's Crossroads facility in Antigua. Spears reportedly refused to stay and checked out a day later.  Harvey Levin, managing editor of TMZ.com, said that Spears' family, concerned about her excessive partying and drinking, staged an intervention and made her go to rehab.

"Her family and friends staged what one might guess you would call an intervention and basically said you have to go," Levin said. "[They] got her to go to a facility there and it appears she was there for a very short period of time and said this is not for me and left."

Spiraling Downward

Spears' reported rehab visit and new, hairless look is the culmination of a wild few months for the pop star. After filing for divorce from her husband Kevin Federline last year, she started club- and bar-hopping all night, all over the country. Spears' behavior troubled her longtime former assistant so much that she published an open letter online saying she was "heart sick by the way her life is unfolding."

"Britney is exhibiting an extreme exaggeration of the behavior of the young starlets out there today. Britney, who once had a thriving career as a pop star, now seems to have no career at all," said Ian Drew of Us Weekly magazine. Her every move has been a tabloid dream.

"On New Year's Eve there was an incident at Pure nightclub in Las Vegas where she just collapsed after midnight," Levin said. "She said she was exhausted, there were a lot of people who think she was drunk."

Spears isn't the only young starlet getting into trouble. Lindsay Lohan just finished a month-long stay at a California rehab facility. Nicole Richie was charged Friday with a DUI stemming from a December arrest. Miss USA Tara Conner spent the holidays getting treatment for alcoholism.

But is rehab the cure-all or just help for a troubled career?  "Rehab is many different things to many different people," Drew said. "Sometimes it is a p.r. ploy and its done simply to rehabilitate someone's image or show that they are cleaning up … or are doing something about a problem in order for business reasons."

People close to Spears are worried that her recent behavior is hurting her career. Larry Rudolph, her manager, has said that Spears knows about the concern and knows "what she needs to do." Regardless, Spears' fans will have the final say on her new, edgier image. If a bald, scandal-ridden Spears can sell as many records as she used to, she may be able to rehab her career and her image.

Britney and Paris out on the town

LOS ANGELES, California - The salon owner tried to talk Britney Spears out of shaving her head, but the singer insisted and actually used a buzzer to do the job herself.

Salon owner Esther Tognozzi said Spears appeared at her shop late last week and announced she wanted all of her hair cut off.  Tognozzi said she refused to do it and tried to reason with the singer.

"Are you sure you're not having a bad day?" Tognozzi recalled asking Spears. "And tomorrow you'll feel differently about it?  "Why don't we wait a little bit?"

At that point, Tognozzi said, the singer grabbed some electric clippers and went to the back of the shop and began cutting her hair off.  All Tognozzi did was "even it out," the salon owner said.  Later, Spears was at a San Fernando Valley tattoo parlor, sporting her newly bald head.

Video on KABC-TV showed the newly shorn Spears with tiny tattoos on the back of her neck as she sat Friday night for a new tattoo -- a pair of red and pink lips.

"She just wanted something real small on her wrist, something dainty," Max Gott, the tattoo artist at Body and Soul in Sherman Oaks, told the TV station. "She got some cute little lips on her wrist." 

Derrik Snell, who works at the tattoo parlor, said Spears showed up without notice and stayed for about 90 minutes as about 60 fans, photographers and gawkers gathered outside.

"She seemed fine," Snell said. "I didn't really notice [the hairdo] at first, she had a hood on when she showed up."

The appearance came the same day as reports on TV and Web sites that Spears, who has drawn criticism for her recent partying and sloppy behavior, had briefly checked into rehab.   Larry Rudolph, Spears' manager, couldn't be reached for comment.

Syndicated entertainment TV show "Extra" first reported that Spears had entered a treatment facility. Celebrity Web site TMZ.com then said the singer had entered a treatment center but had checked out one day later. Neither revealed their sources.

People magazine's Web site, citing "a source," said Spears had gone in and out of rehab, and identified the facility as Eric Clapton's Crossroads center in Antigua, in the Caribbean.  "Access Hollywood" then said the reports weren't true, but didn't cite a source.

A woman who answered the phone at Crossroads said that she couldn't confirm or deny anyone's presence at the facility. Angelique Uram, a Spears fan who stood on the tattoo parlor's sidewalk for Friday night's spectacle, was aghast at the singer's new look.

"We could see her in the mirror, and her head is completely shaved," she told KABC. "It looks terrible."  Police arrived to control the crowd and helped Spears' bodyguards guide her into a waiting SUV, her head covered by a hooded sweatshirt.
