Movistar Wins 3rd Leg of Volvo Ocean Race - 02.15.2006, 08:18 PM

The Spanish yacht movistar won the third leg of the Volvo Ocean Race from Melbourne to Wellington on Thursday, beating overall leader ABN AMRO ONE by a boat-length after 1,450 nautical miles.

ABN AMRO ONE led by up to 33 kilometers (21 miles) in the last 24 hours of the leg but movistar closed the gap steadily and overtook its Dutch rival in light wind as the leaders approached the finish line.

When the finishing gun sounded at the end of the leg that lasted 3 days, 22 hours, only 9 seconds separated the first and second yachts.

Movistar, skippered by Holland's Bouwe Bekking, became the first yacht to break ABN AMRO ONE's stranglehold on line honors.

The yachts will make a brief stopover in the New Zealand capital, then begin the longest leg of the race Sunday, 6,700 nautical miles to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The nine-leg, 36,000-mile race includes other stops in the United States, Britain and the Netherlands before the finish in Goteborg, Sweden, in June.
