Hickstead is the World's premier International Showjumping & Equestrian Venue. For that reason, almost every great show jumper, horse and rider, since 1960 has competed at this venue (see list below).
Douglas Burn
BACKGROUND
Before 1960 there were no show jumping facilities in Great Britain that could match those found in Europe and the United States. Feeling that British riders were disadvantaged facility wise Douglas Burn created the All England Jumping Course after he purchased Hickstead Place and the surrounding land. Douglas was inspired to, in his own words: "put on the best show jumping possible at a venue that is superior to anything found in the world".
In 1971 Hickstead began hosting the British Nations Cup and Grand Prix meeting, the Official Show Jumping Event of Great Britain.
Over the years the Showground has expanded. Today there are six arenas, permanent seating for over 5,000 spectators, 26 corporate hospitality suites and many other facilities.
In 1997 the AEJC looked to be in serious danger of closing after the loss of Silk Cut who sponsored the Derby for over 14 years. At the last minute German show jumper and businessman Paul Schockemohle stepped in to underwrite the season. This has now been formalised into a long term arrangement.
In August 1999 Hickstead hosted the Traxdata European Championships.
So it was that in 2005 The All England Jumping Course celebrated its 45th anniversary as the home of international show jumping in Great Britain. During this time what started as a rural field has been transformed into the world’s number one jumping arena. This was described by the American international show jumping trainer George Morris as a: "magic carpet".
